Building Material

In the beginning, we were given an exercise to choose a location in our home, and to list down at 5 materials used in that area.  

EXERCISE 1 – My Space, My Home

[Definition, function, advantages and disadvantages of the materials listed, were included in to describe the material used. We were encouraged to mention the size of the material used.]

LEARNING OUTCOME

Recognize different types of materials and their properties.

Identify and describe the findings.

For this assignment, it is split to two parts. Part A – a group task, to find an industrial/residential building that allows us to explore and experience the materials used in the space.  Part B – an individual task, by using the same location as the group.

PROJECT 1A - Materiality of SPACE: An Experiential Exploration

[Using the chosen location, we were required to identify the application of the materials used in site along with a mood board that represent the space, as group. Using the plan, sections and elevations to illustrate the location and surrounding of site with the materials used.]

LEARNING OUTCOME

Produce a complete documentation and analysis of materials in respect to physical and chemical properties.

Identification of various types of building material (Finishes and Structural).

Understand the effects of building materials on aesthetics and structural qualities of a space or building.

Understand the appropriateness of material used in context several factors occupancy, concept, climate.

Acquire analytic skill in understanding selection of building materials for a building/design.

Understanding of application/ installation of material as finish and structural material (simple  construction).

Lastly, using the hideout created from Design Studio 1’s final project, we were to state the material used in our hideout.

PROJECT 2 - Integration:  Material Specification.

[Showcasing my understanding of the uses of certain materials in the Building Material industry providing the properties of it along with its advantages and disadvantages. By using the structure of our hideout designed in the Design Studio 1.]

Apply the understanding of various types of building material which affects the tactile and chemical properties of design/building/space

Exploration and identification of various types of building materials and technology

Understand the effects of building materials on occupancy, aesthetics and structural qualities of a space or building, environment and etc.

Produce drawings to visualize the architectural effects of proposed materials (spatial quality)
